Two models: Fast (ESRGAN Slim) for everyday photos, Max detail (ESRGAN Thick) when you can wait a little longer. Nothing is uploaded — the AI runs on your device.
The AI model loads from a CDN on first use. Photos are processed tile by tile: a 1000×1000 photo can take a minute or more, and photos over 1600px are first reduced to 1600px (browser memory limit). Nothing is uploaded.

What AI upscaling can and cannot do
A normal resize just stretches pixels; ESRGAN was trained on millions of photo pairs, so it predicts plausible detail — sharper edges, cleaner textures, readable small text more often than not. Be clear-eyed about the limit: it reconstructs what probably was there; it cannot recover information that was never captured, and faces in heavily compressed photos can come out slightly "painted". For honest expectations: a decent 500px photo becomes a good 1000px one; a 100px thumbnail will not become a poster.
Speed and size notes
The model works in tiles, so memory stays safe, but large photos take real time on modest hardware — a 1000×1000 photo can take a minute or more, phones are slower than laptops. Photos over 1600px are first reduced to 1600px for the model (browser memory limit) and the output size reflects that. Keep the tab open while it works.

Fast vs Max detail?
Fast (Slim) is several times quicker and looks clean. Max detail (Thick) reconstructs finer texture and is worth it for prints and hero images.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The model downloads to your browser once and everything runs on your device.
Why is it slow on my phone?
Super-resolution is heavy maths per tile. Smaller starting photos finish much faster — consider cropping first with our Crop Image tool.
