How to Calculate Chronological Age (With Examples)
Chronological age is simply the time elapsed since birth, expressed in years (and months and days). The calculation is easy to get wrong by a year — here is the method that never does.
Your exact age in years, months and days — plus days lived and next birthday.
The method: subtract, then adjust
Step 1: Subtract birth year from current year.
Step 2: If this year's birthday has not happened yet, subtract one more year.
Example: born 15 March 1990, today 24 October 2026: 2026 − 1990 = 36, birthday has passed, so age = 36. Born 15 December 1990, same date: 36, birthday not yet reached, so age = 35. That second step is where almost every off-by-one error lives.
Exact age in years, months and days
For months and days, use the borrow method: subtract days first (borrowing a month's days if needed), then months (borrowing 12 months if needed), then years. Example: from 15 March 1990 to 24 October 2026 = 36 years, 7 months, 9 days. Or skip the arithmetic: our Age Calculator gives exact age, plus day-of-week and next-birthday countdown, instantly.
Chronological age vs other "ages"
Biological age estimates how your body has aged (biomarkers, fitness) and can differ from chronological age. Forensic age estimation (the "age estimation 18" searches relate to this) estimates whether a person is above or below a legal age threshold, usually 18, from physical development and records — a specialist legal/medical process, not a calculation you do from a birth date. And "how to find out someone's age" in everyday life means asking them or checking a public record or ID they share — there is no legitimate tool that reveals a stranger's age from a name alone.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my age differ between calculators?
Almost always the birthday adjustment: a calculator that ignores whether this year's birthday has passed will read one year high for part of the year.
Is chronological age the same as legal age?
Legal age is a threshold (18, 21) applied to chronological age — you reach it on the birthday itself, not the year after.
How do I calculate age for a past or future date?
Same method, with the target date instead of today — our calculator accepts any reference date.
